Fix #1: Restore corrupted registry via Easy Recovery Essentials
Easy Recovery Essentials can fix many errors such as this automatically using its built-in Automated Repair option. EasyRE is currently available for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and can be downloaded and created on any PC.
- Download Easy Recovery Essentials. Make sure to note your Windows version (XP, Vista, 7 or 8) before you download EasyRE. This guide can help you identify what version of Windows you have installed.
- Burn the image. Follow these instructions on how to burn the bootable ISO image very carefully, as making a bootable CD can be tricky! Alternatively, these instructions explain how to create a bootable EasyRE recovery USB stick/drive.

Fix #2: Reboot a PC into “Last Known Good Configuration”
Rebooting a PC into “Last Known Good Configuration” mode forces a computer to use a saved version of the Windows registry that was in place the last time that computer successfully booted. This should fix all registry-related boot errors, assuming the last registry backup is available and is good condition.
Here are the steps to restore a PC to a previous state:
- Restart the computer
- Wait for the BIOS to complete POST (the screen with manufacturer logo and/or system information)
- Quickly begin tapping F8 repeatedly, until the list of boot options is displayed
- Choose “Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced)”
- Press Enter and wait for the PC to boot.

Fix #2: Check the disk file system with CHKDSK utility
Since the error is often caused by a corrupt registry, checking and fixing the Windows file system with CHKDSK might be a good solution.
Here are the steps to run CHKDSK using the Windows XP Recovery Console:
- Insert the Windows XP installation CD
- Restart the computer and boot from the CD
- Press any key to boot from the CD
- Press R when the Windows Options menu is loaded to access Repair Console
- Enter the Administrator password
- When the Command Prompt appears, type the following command:where
C:
(without a trailing slash:/
) is letter of the Windows installation drive (it’s usuallyC:
) - Press Enter
- Remove the CD and type
exit
: - Press Enter
- Restart the PC
Here is what the PC’s console output should look like after chkdsk is done checking and fixing the drive file system:
Fix #3: Restore the registry manually
The corrupted registry may also be fixed by replacing it with a clean copy that was created on the hard drive when Windows was installed. Note that this operation will restore the system to a state that might be very far from its current state; however, it still should be possible to recover user data in that state. This procedure also should not be used if the computer has an OEM-installed operating system, because the system registry hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. This means that if these steps are followed on an OEM machine, then it may not be possible to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.
First, a backup of all current registry files is made so that they could be restored if anything goes wrong. Then, the existing registry is deleted, and replaced with a clean copy from the C:WindowsRepair folder.
- Insert the Windows XP setup CD and restart the computer
- Press any key to boot from the CD
- Press R to access Repair Console
- Enter the Administrator password. When the Command Prompt appears, type the following commands, one at a time and press Enter after each command, replacing
C:
with the Windows’ drive letter:Backing up current registry hivesRestoring registry hives from a repair folder - Type
exit
and remove your CD: - Press Enter
- Restart your computer
Right after the boot process is completed successfully, it is possible to either backup all user data and reinstall Windows from scratch, or follow the procedure described in the Windows KB corrupted registry article to manually restore the system registry to a more newer version that was backed up by System Restore.

CD (change directory) is a command used to switch directories in MS-DOS and the Windows command line.
Availability
CD is an internal command available in the following Microsoft operating systems:
Syntax
Windows XP and later syntax
. Specifies that you want to change to the parent directory.
Type CD drive: to display the current directory in the specified drive.
Type CD without parameters to display the current drive and directory.
Type CD without parameters to display the current drive and directory.
Use the /D switch to change current drive in addition to changing current directory for a drive.
If Command Extensions are enabled CHDIR changes as follows:
The current directory string is converted to use the same case as the on-disk names. So CD C:TEMP would set the current directory to C:Temp if that is the case on disk.
CHDIR command does not treat spaces as delimiters, to CD into a subdirectory name that contains a space without surrounding the name with quotes. For example:
is the same as:
which is what you would have to type if extensions were disabled.
Windows 98 and earlier syntax
Cd examples
Goes to the highest level (the root) of the drive.
Moves back one directory. For example, if you are in the C:WindowsCOMMAND> directory and type the above command it would take you to C:Windows> directory.
Windows System32 Drivers Windows 10
TipWith Windows 95 and later, you can go back more than one directory when using more than two periods. For example, typing cd.. (three periods) would take you back two directories (if possible) instead of only one directory.
If this directory is available in the current directory, it takes you into the Windows directory. The directory name 'Windows' can be substituted with any other directory name and in MS-DOS and the Windows command line capitalization is not important.

If at any time you need to see what directories are available in the directory you're currently in, use the dir command.
If this directory is available, it would first move back to the root of the drive and then go into the Windows directory. The C:Windows directory is the default install directory, so on almost all computers this directory should be valid.
If this directory is available, it changes into the system32 directory, a subdirectory of the Windows directory.

If for example, you were on the C: drive, typing the above command with the /d option would first switch the E: drive letter and then move into the pics directory.
Typing cd alone will print the working directory. For example, if you're in c:windows> and you type the cd it will print 'c:windows.' For those users who are familiar with Unix or Linux, this could be thought of as doing the pwd (print working directory) command.
